Nickname
Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and strong in faith. And many people were brought to the Lord.
ACTS11:24
His real name was Joseph, but the leaders of the early church gave him the nickname Barnabas, which means “Son of Encouragement” (Acts 4:36).
This guy, Joseph…er, I mean Barnabas, was a Jewish man from the tribe of Levi, and had come to Israel from the island of Cyprus. The book of Acts describes how he had owned a field, had sold it, and had given all of the money to the leaders of the church so it could be distributed to those in need.
Barnabas repeatedly came alongside people who needed support and lavished them with encouragement. Just read the book of Acts and you’ll see what I’m referring to. He believed in Paul when no one else did. He raised money for the poor, he advocated for the outcast, and he stood by John Mark. Anybody who knew him could say, “Oh, Joseph? Yeah, he totally gives me courage!” If people who know you gave you a nickname that reflected the way you live, what would that nickname be?
Pray for the Day:
Dear Jesus, let the way I live today represent what you have gifted me to do. Amen.
