ROMANS16:16
The book of Romans is a soaring theological argument. For fifteen chapters, the apostle Paul explains humanity’s history with God. He summarizes profound truths with memorable phrases and simple language. He writes things like “we all fall short of God’s glorious standard,” “for the
wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord,” “nothing can separate us from God’s love,” and “don’t copy the customs of this world, but let God transform you.”
With all of this amazing clarity, many people overlook the last chapter. After all, instead of eloquent rhetoric, there is just a bunch of people Paul writes to and about. Dozens by name and hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people by reference. Some were famous (like the apostles), while others were obscure (like Junia, or Nereus and his sister, or Rufus’ dear mom). Romans
16 should not be overlooked, however, because in this real-life network of people is the real-life theological truth of Romans. What Paul talks about actually works in the everyday fabric of people’s lives. Jesus unites people in a growing network that changes everything in this world.
Pray for the Day:
Jesus, give me the jump start I need to network with others who are living for Jesus. Amen.
