Always Pray
We always pray for you, and we give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
COLOSSIANS 1:3
Some people don’t think it makes much of a difference to pray. It would be better, they assume, to actually get something done rather than pray. Prayer, after all, doesn’t make much sense in an achievement-based society because it can be difficult to see the immediate outcome of time invested in prayer. It would make more sense, to some people, to be get hands dirty in real “work.”
But, lest we’re mistaken, prayer is hard labor. Prayer gets knees dirty in passionate commitment to God and others. It also gets hearts dirty through love, worries, desires, fears, and joys—through trusting life to God. And prayer also gets movements started. Through prayer God strengthens commitments and raises awareness; he also invites people to join his passion and action already at work in the world.
No one could ever question the action-based mind-set of the apostle Paul. And yet he prayed perhaps more than he did anything else because he wanted so much to participate with what God and his friends were doing in the world. We are to always pray, giving thanks to God—it is worth the time.
Pray for the Day:
Dear Jesus, right now I pray for my friends and family, both near and far. Thank you for their investment in my life. Please draw them closer to you and bless them today. Amen.
