May 6 – Added to the Church
Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all.
A C T S 2 : 4 1
We live in an era when people are walking away from church in droves. Some feel church isn’t relevant or cool, while others feel church isn’t trustworthy. And others just don’t see the point of it all. But ultimately people leave church because they can. They don’t feel compelled to stay.
They simply aren’t finding in church what they need to find. When “church” began 2,000 years ago, the feeling was just the opposite. People left behind everything else in their lives because they had to be a part of the church. The reason for this is simple: They needed Jesus, and church was were they could find him.
Church means “gathering” or “assembly.” The church is a gathering of people who are compelled to find Jesus and be forever changed by him. Church changes the world because Jesus changes those in the church. It is a light and shelter and rock for communities, in any moment, for all seasons. It is a gathering where individuals discover they are a part of something
greater together. Church is where people find Jesus and learn to live with him and for him.
Pray for the Day:
Dear Jesus, don’t let me leave church. Help me find you in a gathering of people. Amen.
