June 8 – Tame
People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God.
JAMES 3 : 7 – 9
We have figured out how to train elephants to stand on buckets—we somehow thought that would be a good idea, so we did it. Also, for some reason, we have persuaded lions to let us stick our heads between their open jaws. We have figured out how to make seals clap, dolphins wave, and killer whales belly flop, all on command. We have even convinced snakes to dance to music, tigers to jump through hoops, and bears to wear tutus and tiaras.
And yet none of us has yet to figure out how to control that little muscle in our mouths. Our tongues praise God and then scorch the earth. Our tongues are unbridled beasts that pretend to be housebroken but stain the carpet when the master lets down his or her guard.
Pray for the Day:
Lord Jesus, let my tongue offer you praise and speak your truth today. Amen.
