June 14 – Omission
Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.
JAMES 4:17
It’s wrong to hit your little brother when your mom isn’t looking, right? We know it’s a sin to do bad things. Bad behavior leads to bad consequences. It’s a transaction that we have learned does in fact take place. But if sin was just about not doing bad things, then someone could conceivably lock themselves up and never do anything bad to anyone.
This, of course, would be ridiculous, but at least that person wouldn’t sin against others. Or would they?
Well, what if sin also involved not doing good things? If your little brother got his hand stuck in the refrigerator ice-making machine and started crying for your help, it would be wrong to just walk away and do nothing for him. You didn’t put his hand in the ice maker—check. You didn’t
hit him while his hand was stuck in the ice maker—check (how kind of you!).
But you didn’t help him either. There is a lot going on in this world where people are stuck. Don’t just walk away..
Pray for the Day:
Lord Jesus, don’t let me be like the jerks who walked by the man stuck on the side of the road. Let me be like the Samaritan, doing what is good in your eyes. Amen.
