June 1 – Listen Quickly
Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.
JAMES 1 : 1 9
One of the best quotes from the classic 1980s movie Ghostbusters occurs when Dan Akroyd’s nervous character poses the following question: “Listen! Do you smell something?” We are a very distracted people. We struggle to listen without being flooded by all kinds of other stimulation that stirs all of our other senses. Our challenge today is to be radically different than the preoccupied culture around us.
Listen carefully. Don’t speak quickly. Listen quickly. Don’t get angry quickly. This is wise advice in a world that can be just the opposite: flare up the temper, vomit the verbal output, and, sorry, what were you saying? While hotheaded and loose-mouthed reactions can be signs of uncaring attitudes, the skill of listening to others shows a heart that cares for people. Listening
to someone shows a person they are valued, important, and worth the time.
This could simply be life changing.
Pray for the Day:
Lord Jesus, let my words be few and my ears be wide open. Amen.
