May 31 – Flourish
But the godly will flourish like palm trees and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon. For they are transplanted to the Lord’s own house. They flourish in the courts of our God. Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green.
P S A LM 9 2 : 1 2 – 1 4
Palm trees in Israel are known as date palms, flourishing for at least 5,000 years. They are a symbol of refuge for travelers and an abundant economic resource for fruit, syrups, grains, fibers, and timber. Their leaves were used to celebrate victory, such as when Jesus entered Jerusalem on
what has come to be known as Palm Sunday.
Cedar trees were once abundant in Lebanon. They were tall (sometimes a 120 feet) and strongly rooted. Their wood was world renowned for its beautiful red color, for its lightweight yet resilient strength, and for being resistant to decay and repellant to insects. When people choose to root themselves in the patterns of God, they flourish and bless the world like these two types of trees.
Pray for the Day:
Lord Jesus, let me live a life rooted deeply into you so that I may be used to bless others. Amen.
