May 20 – Extravagant Grace
Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed amazing miracles and signs among the people.
A C T S 6 : 8
We don’t think we can handle this. People in droves rejected Jesus because he was different, or maybe, more accurately, he was more than what they had imagined. They probably tried to go back to their regular patterns, numbing themselves to apathy. We need grace, they must have admitted, but Jesus is too good; he’s too much. He would change our lives.
The only way to truly live according to grace is to be changed by Jesus. But that means giving up control of our lives. Grace doesn’t give us the power to do what we want. Rather, grace empowers us to do what Jesus does.
When we receive God’s grace, we let ourselves be overwhelmed and we let Jesus use us to make a difference in others—not just in times of catastrophe, but in everything. When we accept Jesus, we start to stand and to overflow with grace toward others. Grace isn’t what we deserve; it’s what we need. And it’s even more than what we need. That might be overwhelming to think about. But this is what followers of Jesus do—they receive and offer extravagant grace.
Pray for the Day:
Jesus, help me to walk gracefully today. Amen.
