Wonderful Counselor
The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.”
PSALM 32 : 8
In Isaiah 9:6 are four sets of word pairs that are used to describe the child who would be born to us. The first is “Wonderful Counselor.” By itself in English, this is pretty cool. Imagine putting this title on his birth certificate: “Yes, that’s what I said. His name is Wonderful Counselor.” But this title is even more impressive in Hebrew, the language Isaiah used. It is a title of awe. The Hebrew is pele yoetz. Pele means “wonder.” In the Old Testament this word usually refers to God and his miraculous works. He is astonishing and marvelous and indescribable. Pele hints at the deity of this child who is to be born. It is a word that could even stand alone, and Isaiah 9:6 could be translated, “He will be called Wonder.”
And not only will he be called Wonder, but he will also be called Counselor. The Hebrew word yoetz means “counselor,” “adviser,” or “advocate.” This child will sit on the throne of the world with wisdom and with judgment. He is a counselor who needs no other consultants or analysts around him. This child does not need a cabinet to help him make decisions. He himself is the Counselor to whom everyone else will turn. The child born among us is called Wonderful Counselor.
Pray for the Day:
Jesus, if you find I am not in awe of you, shake me up a bit today. Amen.
