With the Right Words
Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God.
EPHESIANS 5:4
Consider all the effort we spend on profanity. Much of the most popular music, media, and Internet outlets are riddled with it. Our culture has become saturated in obscenity, which, of course, makes it seem less obscene with each passing day. This is a difficult path to walk for those who want to follow Jesus. The prevailing winds of culture that blow against us on the path shape so much of what we think and speak on a daily basis, often without us stopping to realize it.
Paul, a man who was certainly not afraid to use provocative language when necessary (for the right reasons), encouraged people to substitute words of thanksgiving for words of vulgarity. What if, he thought, instead of spending our energy on poisonous words, we spoke gratefulness? How would we be changed? And how would our example have a slow, steady impact on those around us?
Pray for the Day:
Jesus, make me aware today of the words I say. I pray that my heart would overflow with thankfulness today. Amen.
