November 17
First
He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, “Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else.”
MARK 9 : 35
Humility is one of those personal characteristics that is nearly impossible to admit you have. Right? Once you admit it, do you still have it?
This is the intentionally tricky logic of Jesus. He is shrewd. He knows that we humans love to be recognized for being great, which really makes us not so great. So he ensnares his followers with a little teaser about humility. “So,” he said, “you’d like to be recognized for being great, eh?” (Yes, Jesus can speak Canadian English.) “Well, then just make sure you treat everyone else as if they are greater than you.”
The disciples, learning the secret formula to God’s great sauce, must have been excited at first. “Aha! Now we’ll be greatest in the kingdom of heaven!” Little did they know that by continuing to serve others, by continuing to make themselves “last,” the disciples would be transformed.
In the persistence of their good service, they would be changed more and more into the likeness of Jesus.
Pray for the Day:
Jesus, thanks for tricking me into being transformed by you. Amen.
