Stealing Compliments

Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it’s in your power to help them.

PROVERBS 3 : 27

It is a sad reality of our culture that those who consistently do the best work often don’t get the recognition they deserve. It’s like a fun little game called “stealing compliments.” You should try it sometime. If someone says, “Oh my, that is a beautiful sunset!” you simply say, “Thank you!” If someone says, “I love the paint color in this restaurant,” then you say, “Thanks for noticing.” And if someone says, “The Bugatti is the coolest sports car ever,” you say, “Thank you. I’m glad you think so.”

This is a ridiculous game, of course, because someone else is responsible for the work behind each of those items. Someone else designed that car, painted that restaurant, and someone else created that sky. But it is also ridiculous that our culture takes for granted, or even steals praise from, the effective influence of a person of creative integrity and productive talent.

It’s as if the fruits of their work are stolen from them. Many of our best and brightest people could use more resources, more acknowledgement, and more encouragement than they are given.

Pray  for the Day:

Jesus, I have often been blind to those around me who deserve my praise. Help me to recognize their work, to invest in their future, and to enthuse their hearts. Amen.
