October 17
Midnight
Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening.
ACTS 16:25
Paul and Silas healed a slave girl. They healed her! And her masters got upset because they made a lot of money off of her affliction. And because she was now healed, they had lost their ability to profit from her. So the masters grabbed Paul and Silas and incited the authorities against them
in the city’s marketplace. Because they had disrupted the unjust economic system, a mob formed against them. Paul and Silas were severely beaten and then thrown into prison, where they were chained by their feet to the walls. Then Paul and Silas sang praises to God.
Pray for the Day:
Dear Jesus, I’m not sure that would have been my response in this situation. How were they able to bring themselves to sing praise after being treated so harshly? How were they able to continue praising you publicly? The jailer heard them, the other prisoners heard them, and you heard them. Lord, give me the heart to praise you today. Amen.
